Turandot [Opera Ireland]
[by Giacomo Puccini]
[November 2007, Gaiety theatre, Dublin]
[Director - Dieter Kaegi]
[Set & Lighting design - Paul Keogan]
For Opera Ireland’s winter season production of Puccini’s Turandot, i produced four main video sequences and a number of stills and projected backgrounds. These were projected on to a 10 x 6m scrim. The main sequence – Turandot’s arrival – involved an exterior night video shoot before the production moved into the Gaiety theatre. In a rising moon sequence i mapped a high-resolution image of the moon on a sphere in 3D, this was then animated and rendered out. the moon revolved slightly over the 6 minute movement. the other pieces were shot, edited and post-produced on site in the gaiety. it was a great way to work as i could immediately preview a sequence where it was intended to be shown. i also rigged two video cameras that were used live during the performance.
