The Coming World [Making Strange Theatre Co.]
[by Christopher Shinn]
[Making Strange Theatre Co. Directed by Tom Creed.]
[13-24 NOVEMBER, 2007 Project Cube]
[Dora works a dead end job in a New England seaside town. Her ex, Ed, owes $10,000 to the wrong people and, despite everything, she finds herself dragged into his desperate plan to escape them and begin a new life. Ed's brother, Ty, has cut himself off from family and friends and buried himself in a private world of work.
On a beach at night, the regrets of the past, confusions of the present and possibilities of the future must be faced.
A tender and haunting play about identity, love and guilt from one of America's hottest young playwrights.]
For The Coming World I produced three video sequence that were played back on three LCD monitors on the back wall of the set. One sequence required a view out to sea as the sun set. We didn’t have the budget for a shoot so I put together a Max patch that automated the sunset from a seamless loop of sea+horizon that I made from some stock footage. The duration from day to night was adjustable as were the hues and saturation. The other pieces were an abstract underwater effect and a TV ‘snow’ effect.
