[music video for Dublin band alias glee]

[directed by Jonathan McCauley]

[camera, lights, renderfarm - me]

the video for overtime was a LONG time in the making and i think the final version [below] might explain why. an undertaking of this size and complexity by a couple of people on a couple of laptops is madness! major kudos to Jonny who did all of the post and editing on his LAPTOP (sorry for the shouting), which was so overworked that we had to buy it one of those cooling bases. that laptop is sitting on a shelf in RedSpace… it should be in a frickin’ glass case. sheesh.

The video was all shot in front of a green screen (a white sheet from pennys, green fabric dye from trimmings!). I knocked together a turntable from junk that each musician stood on and played while being rotated. actors were then placed into 3D environments (3D studio max) and rendered out. Post all done in AE with shitloads of effects. Final render done in our kitchen on 2 borrowed desktop PCs (thanks to bleeeeep for that), and four laptops (mine, jonnys, erins (we literally grabbed it out of her still typing hands) and brians old one, umami, if i remember correctly). our ‘render farm’ involved me getting up in the middle of the night to restart exhausted machines. fun.

i played music with alias glee for 8 or so years while it existed. pretty great time – playing music with your best friends, but alas the outdated structure of ‘the band’ got the best of us. till the end and safety in numbers (here) are two tracks i wrote that we managed to record if you’re interested, most of the rest never got properly recorded. Other music on alias glee’s myspace page – overtime was written by Liam Caffrey and Tunnelling by Brian De Brit. John McEvoy played bass and sang and Liam Dalton sang. It’s interesting to see a web page like a myspace profile slowly and organically disintegrate from neglect as urls become broken and images moved or deleted. could be fun to do a time-lapse video from periodic grabs of a similar page. anywho.
