[The Joy Gallery, Dublin, Ireland]
finally got a chance to try out something i’d been messing around with on max/jitter for a while, namely projecting separate video feeds onto multiple arbitrary shapes. for this i used two patches, one (masksketch, ohh it has a name) is a tool for painting masks onto surfaces through the projector, to be used later as an alpha channel within the second patch. The second patch is the performance patch. for the E+S=B show at the Joy Gallery for DEAF 2008, it was set up for 7 video channels to be projected onto 7 ‘TV’ screens made from cardboard boxes. i really like the idea of mixing very high-tech and very low-tech to achieve an effect that couldn’t be pulled off with just one or the other. the boxes were painted white and child-like drawings of rounded screens and buttons were drawn on with a wide-marker. Two live cameras and 7 video players could be routed to any or all of the 7 TVs. one of the cameras was a bluethooth camera in a mobile phone for a roaming coverage of the gig, thanks to Brian for that.
the beauty of this is that the TVs can be placed anywhere within the projection area and can be masked off later.
unfortunately i only have two photos of the thing in action and they’re pretty bad. (jonny + wine = blur :)
it was nice to do this for the first time in my own venue! took the pressure off. i’m hoping to expand on the idea a bit with George with a view to a possible performance/dance piece. i won’t be dancing. this time.
